Horses and Olympic Games
November 27, 2008 - June 1, 2009
Young athletes on fast horses and spectacular chariot races with fatal accidents in ancient times, dressage, show jumping, and eventing nowadays – the horse was and still is the only animal that became important for Olympic competitions. The upcoming exhibition "Horse and Olympic Games" will be on view starting November 27, 2008, and displays original objects including ancient vases, the Olympic torch from 1936, a model of ancient Olympia, and a horse container for transportation purposes. Moreover, a diversified collection of film footage, photographs, and personal items from top riders help to 'revive' the Olympic Spirit.
In addition to introducing the Olympic heroes and their famous horses, the exhibition covers various topics such as changes in demands on professional sporting contests, aspects dealing with transportation requirements and restrictions, and recent doping issues.
"Horses and Olympic Games" is designed in cooperation with the German Sports & Olympia Museum in Cologne. It's funded by the Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia. The exhibition is under the auspices of Hans Günter Winkler.

Trademark Horse -
Horse as Advertising Medium
November 30, 2007 - July 31, 2008

On the first glance it may be astonishing, but there is something a Ferrari, a Porsche, a "Westphalia" petrol station, Hermès perfumes, Scotch Whisky, different kinds of beer, and the LVM insurance have in common: the horse as a trademark.
Due to its popularity and the sympathy given to it by many people, the horse is an advertising medium of long standing. There is hardly any branch of trade that is not using the horse for advertising or as its trademark. Beauty, strength, celerity, and classiness are just some of the attributes standing for the attractiveness of horses. Galloping horses are the embodiment of freedom; equestrian sports like polo or show jumping are representing vitality and pep. Why exactly is advertising with horses that successful?
In its full scope, the exhibition displays in four sections the usage of the horse as advertising medium and as trademark:
Fast and Strong: Cars and Fuels
Beautiful and Attractive: Fashion and Perfumes
Freedom and Pleasure: Tobaccos and Spirits
The "Westphalian Steed": Advertising Medium for Insurance Companies
Accompanying the exhibition, the booklet "Trademark Horse - from Ferrari to White Horse Whisky" was published and is available for €4.95 in the museum shop.

Police and Horses
Between good and evil –
the history of the mounted police
February 12, 2006 - June 11, 2007

Despite all clamor, the mounted police in North Rhine-Westphalia was disbanded in 2003. But only three years later, after a change in the federal state government, the riding squads Westphalia and
Many citizens know and appreciate the imposing appearance of mounted policemen, but only a few are familiar with the daily routines of these riders. Training sessions as well as tours on duty demand men's and horses' maximum capacity, both physically and mentally. For centuries, horses have been indispensable for police work; nevertheless, their benefit was and still is challenged.
The exhibition "Police and Horses" shows the turbulent history of the mounted police. It introduces visitors to the beginnings of the mounted police, leads through the dark eras of the world wars, and explains the backgrounds of today's police work.
The "Landwirtschaftsverlag Münster" published a book about the contents of this exhibition. Police and Horses is the only current publication dealing with this topic as well as the first one ever describing the mounted police in this breadth. The book is available for €10 in regular bookstores and in the museum shop.

In Motion - Horse Drawings by Wilhelm M. Busch
June 26 - September 25, 2005

Wilhelm Martin Busch is one of the major drawers and illustrators of the 20th century. His chief interests lay in equestrian sports and the circus.
Busch illustrated over 300 books, including those of great authors such as Tolstoi, Dostojewski, and Fontane as well as several fairy tales. His artwork never was an end in itself but was supposed to sensitize the readers to the texts without devitalizing the message of the written pieces. As distinct from his illustrations, which are lovingly drawn right down to the last detail, his empathetic freehand drawings are completed with only with a few lines, catching the movements of animals and people. Especially horses were one of Busch's favorite motives, and his drawings impress with their dynamism, diversity, and individuality.

Visitors of the
The Horse According to Otmar Alt
August 21 - September 5, 2004
More than 100 Werner-Rolevink elementary school pupils from Laer studied in their art classes the horse according to Otmar Alt. Following Alt's motto: "Art that you have to explain is boring," the children simply got started. The fruits are astonishing: pictures full of fantasy and bold colors. It is hard to believe that some of these artists are less than seven years of age. Besides the pupils' pictures, the exhibition display works of Alt as well.
The exhibition emerged out of the Regionale 2004 and is a joint project between the art gallery Art et Accessoires, the Werner-Rolevinck elementary school, the Otmar Alt Store, and the Westphalian Horse Museum.
Black-and-White Horse
June 15, 2003 - January 2, 2004

The classiness, beauty, strength, and stamina of horses, their desire for freedom combined with their loyalty has fascinated us for a long time.
Like no other photographer, Peter Thomann caught the soul of horses in his pictures, which achieve iconic status in the field of photography.
The classic black-and-white shots made by the Stern-photographer Thomann on his travels allow insights into the life of the last wild horses. Additionally, they illuminate the dateless relationship between men and horses.
When Thomann himself still was a student at Folkwang in 1963, he took the famous photograph “Mare with Foal” in Merfelder Bruch, which is the last hideaway for wild horses in Germany. This photo traveled all around the world and even was honored with the World Press Photo Award. Today, it is the official logo of the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, USA.
